Four officials detained after a bridge collapsed killing 11 in South China

GUANGZHOU: Four people were detained for a bridge collapse Saturday in south China's Guangdong Province that killed 11 and severely injured two, authorities said on Sunday.

The village committee director, two people from the construction contractor of the uncompleted bridge and a township official were held responsible for the accident, said Liang Ruibo, Gaozhou City spokesperson.

The stone arch bridge under construction in Liangping Village in Gaozhou City collapsed at around 1 p.m. Saturday.

The unlicensed bridge was being built by the village itself. The local government ordered suspension of the project in April, but its construction resumed covertly during the holiday.
