MP vows to block town’s expansion

Narok: Narok North MP Moitalel ole Kenta says the Maasai community will not cede “an inch” of their land for the proposed expansion of Narok town as being pushed by Governor Samuel Tunai.

Speaking in Nairobi yesterday, Ole Kenta said the community is ready to put up a fight against the planned forceful acquisition of 600 acres of land by the county government, allegedly to help in decongesting the town.

The MP dismissed warnings issued by Narok County Security Team led by County Commissioner Kasim Farah, against holding demonstrations to protest the acquisition of the land, saying it was the community’s constitutional right to protest.

He accused the county commissioner of taking sides on the matter, urging him to keep off the row that has pitted local leaders, including former Minister and area MP William Ole Ntimama, against the Governor.

“The land the governor is plotting for acquisition is community land and we will not cede an inch of it. We will fight against this plan because there is no way community property can just be taken away from them without consultations,” said Kenta.

“We want to tell the Provincial Administration that we will hold demonstrations because it is our right to do so, and we will not be intimidated by the warnings they are issuing. We shall use every means available to protect the interests of our people,” he added..
