Party leaders in blame game over services

Nyeri: Nyeri Governor Nderitu Gachagua was yesterday asked to “wake his government from slumber” and sack his chief of staff during Jamhuri Day celebrations.

Differences in the Grand National Union (GNU) party and other elected leaders in his backyard were brought to the fore by Assembly Majority Leader Anthony Kibuu who accused the county government of failing to deliver “simple” services like grading roads.

TNA’s Kibuu claimed the county government was committed to ensuring all county representatives were not re-elected in 2017 by not delivering promises it pledged.

“The government is only buying new vehicles, instead of procuring graders that will make roads. My people are complaining of bad roads during this rainy season and you are doing nothing,” said Kibuu.

“You have to remove Maina Mathenge from the government if you are to be seen to be working. He is a hindrance to development,” said Kibuu.

Nyeri County Assembly Speaker Mwangi Mugo was unhappy with Kibuu after he directly accused the county government’s Chief of Staff Duncan Maina Mathenge of being a hindrance to development.

“We will never deliver if we continue fighting. We cannot afford to continue passing blame from the County Assembly to the Executive,” said Mugo.

The differences came to the fore barely five days after Gachagua was involved in another public altercation with Kieni MP Kanini Kega and his Mathira counterpart Peter Weru during a meeting held at Narumoru Stadium.

HEAVY RAINS

Heavy rains disrupted Jamhuri Day celebrations in Nyeri town, forcing members of the public who flocked Dedan Kimathi Kamukunji grounds to flee and seek cover.

Gachagua had to cut short his written speech and retreat to an off the cuff address that lasted about five minutes, as the rains intensified, forcing even journalists to leave.

The rains started shortly before area Senator Mutahi Kagwe was invited by County Commissioner Michael Mwangi to address the public, who were already leaving after heavy dark clouds formed a dense blanket in the sky. Gachagua commended former freedom fighters for their efforts.
