Clerks in Sh20m scam face the sack

The Government has directed DCs who chair District Alcohol Control Committees to interdict and surcharge committee clerks involved a recent liquor licensing scandal.

Further, at least Sh12 million out of more than Sh20 million that had been lost at the National Agency for the Campaign Against Drug Abuse (Nacada) through the scam has been recovered.

Speaking to The Standard on Saturday yesterday, Nacada CEO William Okedi confirmed the directive.

“Yes, the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Interior has directed the interdiction and surcharging of district clerks involved in corruption. I have copies of that letter. Further, action has also been taken and some clerks are already in court over misappropriation of funds. We are also working with Anti-Banking Fraud Unit, Criminal Investigations Department and Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission and investigations are underway,” Mr Okedi said.

And in a new development, he said Nacada staffs were not involved in the malpractice and those responsible are employees of the Ministry of Interior.

He explained that whereas Nacada has a collaborative role with the Ministry of Health and Interior, it does not collect monies in liquor licensing directly.
