Baringo County: A family of 100 in Kokwototo Village in East Pokot District, Baringo County, has been rendered homeless after in-laws torched their houses over the death of their kin.

The family of Lotudong’olol Narukane Long’utul, 70, was left homeless after armed members of his late younger wife’s clan raided his home, burning houses, destroying property and fleeing with over 3,000 livestock - 2,000 goats and 1,000 cows.

Several acres of maize were also destroyed, rendering the family destitute. Mzee Long’utul, the husband of eight wives and father of more than 80 children, said the attackers invaded his home after his younger wife died while undergoing treatment in hospital.

Mzee Long’utul, however, described the attack as robbery with violence, as a post-mortem revealed that his wife died of Hepatitis and intestinal obstruction.

The family head said no action has been taken despite the matter being reported to the police.

Area DC Daniel Kurui termed the incident primitive and illegal, adding that police are pursuing the culprits even though he acknowledged the issue had been solved by the elders.
