5 ways to kill your dreams

Think of the dreams you have, and the mark you want to leave in the world. It is an astonishing difference between the dreams we have and the projects that happen. After a vast study of key successful people, there are five things to avoid if you want to achieve your dreams.

1. Believe in overnight success. You may think it’s as simple as Stephen King writing “Carrie” and selling over 350 million copies, Thomas Edison creating a lightbulb or your neighbor applying for a school sponsorship and voila! He got it. Well, if you investigate further, King’s book was consistently rejected 30 times before its first publication, Thomas failed 1,000 times before creating the lightbulb and your neighbor has been taking life and education seriously for the past 16 years. It only worked because of the intense hard work they put prior to their success. It’s never an overnight success. The overnight success is an outcome of everything you’ve been doing in your life within that moment.

2. Believe you are not to blame. People will constantly say, “I created an outstanding product, but no one bought it.” Or “Why don’t they employ me? I meet the expected qualifications.” The market may be bad, but if no one bought your product or employed you, for sure, something there is your fault. It may be hard to find a job, but if you have dreams, it’s up to you to make them happen. If you don’t make them happen, it’s you to blame and nobody else. Be accountable for your dreams.

3. Believe others have the answers for you. Your friends, your family, your fellow employees want to help out, right? Everyone around you has an opinion on what you should do or which path you should take. Life offers infinite choices at some point, and you need to keep making decisions. No one has the ideal answers for your life or really understands what your dreams are. You alone know your dreams or what you want in life. Making personal decisions is a significant step in achieving your dreams.

4. Believe that dreams are what only matter. It takes great effort and days to climb to the peak of Mount Kenya. Once at the peak, you may only enjoy for a few hours before descending back. Life is the same; it’s about the journey, but never about the goals themselves. Achieving some goals may take a lifelong journey. People should enjoy their goals, which is a temporary feeling, but your life is not. The best way to really realize your dreams is to completely relish every step of the journey. Along the journey, you may trip or it may be smooth. If you trip, turn that into a lesson. If it’s smooth, celebrate, because some people wait too long to celebrate. If your journey becomes a lesson or a celebration, you will enjoy it.

5. Believe you should settle down when growth is certain. Life is going great, you have a good team, your revenue is growing, growth is guaranteed-everything is okay. It is time to settle. Okay is never okay. “When I am growing towards a peak, I work harder than ever to find myself another peak.” Do you wonder why Bill Gates never stops working yet he is the richest person in the world? He finds a new peak. He works harder to see a new version of Microsoft Windows released to the world. All he can see is a higher peak. There is never a time to settle down. There is magic in believing in your dreams!
