The knife of love in Campuses

Love, or the idea of it, has proven to be a costly affair in campuses in general and Moi University in particular. Cases of lovebirds picking up the knife and stabbing their partners over cheating claims have become the norm rather than the exception.

Most recently, Wednesday March 23rd 2016, a first year male student at Moi University (Eldoret Town Campus) identified as Dickson Sirengo stabbed to death a fourth year male student, Steve Wairimu, eight times in the chest. At the heart of the matter, no pun intended, is Faith Bwire, a first year student who apparently was in an affair with both gentlemen. Dickson was later detained by the police in Langas police station.

March 15th 2016: a third year male student at the University of Nairobi is stabbed to death by his 19 year old girlfriend after reportedly posting a photo of another woman on Facebook. The killer is arrested by police.

February 26th 2016: a fourth year female student at Egerton University is stabbed to death by her boyfriend, a casual worker. The incident occurs at the student’s rented room in Njoro and the assailant is later killed by a mob. The couple leaves behind a 4 months old baby.

July 12, 2015: a 23 year old Moi University (Eldoret West Campus) female student is killed by her ex-boyfriend in her room at 8 P.M. the man is later killed by a mob.

April 26th 2015: a 21 year old female student at the University of Kabianga is stabbed to death by her boyfriend in a ladies’ hostel for allegedly cheating on him.

Now if recent trends are anything to go by, then it will only be a matter of time before another unlucky student gives up the ghost in these love triangles.

It is becoming extremely dangerous and painful to fall in love in campus. You never know when the knife will strike, and there is no substitute to human life. Most of the assailants later on confess they were not in their right minds when attacking the other party. Were they in their right minds when falling in love?

It is becoming extremely believable when someone says that they will kill for love, they mean every murder sentence they will get. But critical questions have to be asked.

Maybe watching too much Titanic and Cuando Seas Mia has corrupted the notion that is love. Having too much variety in a campus setting such that you are surrounded by women (and men) presents itself as an opportunity to taste from a different honey pot. Besides, forbidden fruit tastes sweetest.

Not to excuse the followers of Shakespeare but if you have to fall in love, kindly leave the knives in the kitchen. And if (s) he tells you that if you ever leave him, he will die…take off! He will die alright, but that is after he picks a butcher knife and takes your heart with him. After all, didn’t you say till death do us part?
