Chief arrested, illegal brews worth millions found at his premise

Murang’a, Kenya: A chief in Murang’a County was Friday arrested with an assortment of second generation brews in his licensed liquor outlet.

Kigumo location chief Stephen Kihara was arrested on orders by Murang’a County Commissioner Kula Hache after assorted brands of second generation brews were found in his bar.

Ms Kula said she will not entertain chiefs who have failed to act in accordance to the government directive. Luck was not on the administrator’s side after the regional police commander Larry Kings, Hache and Kigumo MP Jamleck Kamau raised suspicion on his movement as he rode on a motor cycle for his premises leaving others walking to Kigumo market.

Earlier, the lawmaker had expressed lack of confidence in chiefs after locals accused the administrators as part of cartel behind illicit brews. Mr Kamau led the public to the homestead where brews worth millions of shillings were allegedly intercepted.

Inside the homestead the police discovered assorted brands of liquor which were collected and taken to Kigumo grounds for destruction.

“I am not happy with the trend as chiefs are implicated in the cartels,” said Kamau.

Last year, Kirere market was in the news after more than seven people died after they consumed a brew that was on sale in the locality.
