Narok County set to improve road network

The national government has launched plans to revamp the road network in the county.

In a ceremony presided over by Deputy President William Ruto on Monday, the county government kicked off the planned upgrading of a 38km road network in Narok town earmarked for tarmacking and which will boost tourism in the world-famous Maasai Mara Game Reserve.

The road project comes just a month after flash floods washed away major infrastructure in Narok town and affected business operations.

Already, the county government has upgraded over 1,500km of rural road networks in the two years it has been in office.

A few months ago, the county launched a clean water supply system aimed at improving tourism in the town. In the past, tourism players have blamed the poor roads in the town for low investment in hotels despite the town being a getaway to the game reserve.

Long overdue

Siana Conservancy Chairman Sammy Nkoitoi said the upgrading of roads to Maasai Mara was long overdue as local investors had shied away from the town due to poor roads.

During the flagging off ceremony, the DP said Sh1.2 billion had been set aside to build two bypasses that would decongest Narok town.

“As a way of supporting the Narok county government implement its town plan, the national government has set aside funds for bypasses in Rotian and Ewaso Nyiro,” he said.

There were also promises from officials of the national government to build the Maji Moto-Sekanani road.

The road, leading straight to the Mara, has been set for upgrading for many years.
