Unite if you want presidency, leaders say

Kericho, Kenya: Fifteen legislators from the North Rift have called for Kalenjin unity if the community is to take over power at the end of President Uhuru Kenyatta's term.

The 15 legislators from Kanu and URP warned that the community risked losing its political clout in the country if they continued with their political bickering.

"The political temperature is rising by the day, with some leaders dividing the community for personal interests. Others are waiting to be in Government," warned Kericho Senator Charles Keter.

Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen called on Kalenjins to continue rallying behind Deputy President William Ruto since they were assured of ascending to the presidency in 2022.

"There are leaders who want to ensure there is division among us. We must ensure we remain in Government, which is only possible if we remain united," he said.

POPULARISE PARTY

But when Kanu Secretary General Nick Salat stood to speak, he wondered why the party leaders were being attacked.

He noted that all they wanted to do is to popularise Kanu ahead of the 2017 elections while helping to address challenges in the country.

"We are being disparaged for nothing. We are now wondering whose eggs we have stepped on. Our competitors should know that Kanu has awakened and should brace themselves for a bruising battle before the 2017 polls," said Mr Salat.

Other legislators promised to rally behind the Deputy President.

"As a community, we shall help the DP clinch the presidency because he has been tried and tested as a seasoned leader," said William Cheptumo (Baringo North)
