Homa Bay Agricultural Training Centre, which is to become a constituent college of Maseno University will be named after the former trade unionist and minister for Economic Planning, the late Tom Mboya.

Governor Cyprian Awiti yesterday penned an agreement with the university management that will see the establishment of Tom Mboya Memorial University college, the first university in the county.

He said the county will allocate Sh38 million to help in renovating existing infrastructure. The facility will however, continue to train farmers on modern agricultural practices.

"Our prayers have finally been answered because we have the university we have longed for. We hope that in three years we will have a charter," said the governor after signing the agreement with Maseno University Senate Vice Chairman Dan Omino and the Vice-Chancellor Prof Dominic Makawiti at the county headquarters yesterday.

"I know higher education is not fully devolved but we have to help hasten the process. Our people are very thirsty for a university," said Mr Awiti. The university hopes to have the first enrollment in September.
