Owing to the prevailing dry weather condition, the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) yesterday issued a fire alert within Mt Kenya and the Aberdare forest.

In a statement, KFS Mt Kenya Regional Ecosystem Conservator Francis Mathinji said the fast drying vegetation within the major forests had increased the danger of fire breakout.

"We declare forest fire danger season, in accordance with the Forest Act of 2005," the statement reads in part.

Mathinji directed KFS officers on leave to resume duty with immediate effect.  "All forest rangers should remain in their work place 24 hours a day, including weekends and holidays," he said.

Other vulnerable areas include Nanyuki, Gathiru, Narumoro and Kabaru forests.
