Two rogue policemen attacked in Ruai for failing to identify themselves

On May 16, the cops attached to Security of Government Buildings (SGB) unit went to a home in Kamulu at 8pm posing as Kenya Power technicians on routine check.

Two Administration Police officers were attacked by an angry mob in Kamulu, Ruai, after they failed to properly identify themselves.

Okello Hassan Juma succumbed to his wounds, while his colleague, Hussein Mohammed Hassan, is still in hospital. Juma is related to a vocal MP from Busia County.

On May 16, the cops attached to Security of Government Buildings (SGB) unit went to a home in Kamulu at 8pm posing as Kenya Power technicians on routine check.

The owner of the home, David Opere Otieno, became suspicious as it was not normal for the utility company employees to do such checks that late in the night. The APs allegedly did not have Kenya Power identification cards to prove that they were indeed employees of the power company. On failing to produce the documentation, they reportedly identified themselves as police officers, but still could not convincingly explain why they were changing the story and the purpose of their visit that late.

Opere raised the alarm, which attracted his neighbours. The APs stationed at Kenyatta University main campus took to their heels with a mob in hot pursuit. They were cornered by the mob that beat them up before colleagues on patrol came to their rescue.

Meanwhile, their getaway saloon car that had parked a few metres from Opere’s house sped off. Residents told police that a woman was behind the wheels. The same car is linked to an earlier robbery in the same area.

“We have been informed that a gang operating in a similar style stole Sh51,000 from a neighbouring home in the area. The description of the car the robbers used fits the one that sped from this second incident. We are looking for the female driver of the car,” said a senior officer.

The injured officers were rushed to Nairobi West Hospital where Juma died. The SGB unit’s main functions include VIP protection, guarding of key government buildings and installations, provision of security for cash in transit and emergency response.
