10 things we learned in the Premier League this weekend

The battle for survival hotted up on Saturday - who will stay up?

Leicester have been forced to put the champagne on ice after their 1-1 draw with Manchester United.

Wes Morgan cancelled out Anthony Martial's opener at Old Trafford to leave Leicester needing just two more points to be crowned champions.

They could seal the title tonight - if Tottenham don't beat Chelsea.

The battle at the bottom is set to go right down to the wire following Newcastle's win over Crystal Palace.

Sunderland picked up a vital point at Stoke while Norwich suffered a 1-0 defeat at Arsenal.

Here are 10 things we learned.

1. Foxes show strength of character

Many teams would have wilted under the sustained early pressure from United and Martial's goal.

But Leicester showed the strength of character that has taken them to the brink of an extraordinary title triumph by equalising through Wes Morgan.

2. Martial proves his class

Fresh from his assist and winner to send United into the FA Cup final , Martial netted again, plundering his 15th goal of his debut campaign in England.

It's further proof of his impressive predatory instincts in front of the target.

3. Everton fans are plane crazy

Right on cue, just as the interval approached, a section of Everton fans expressed their dissatisfaction with a banner flown over the ground which read: 'Time to go Roberto'.

Apart from wondering who has the money to chuck around on something as frivolous as that, you also wonder what it will achieve.

A similar banner was flown at Southampton a few months ago telling Chairman Bill Kenwright to go. Little did they know he was in talks to do exactly that.

You suspect something similar with the manager.

4. Rafa revolution in full swing

Before kick-off Benitez had been in charge of seven games and overseen six points won.

Sacked Steve McClaren's last six games before he was sacked yielded... you guessed it, six points.

There is however, a vast change in attitude from Newcastle players since Benitez arrived.

And tactically he is getting the most out of a slightly limited and confidence-shorn first team.

They'd have lost this game two months ago. Instead they stuck in, were tight and organised and fought for their lives.

5. Defoe can keep Sunderland up

Defoe's late penalty was his 14th Premier League goal in 31 games and he is scoring the goals to fire their survival bid.

6. Watford fans love Quique

He may be on the way out because of Watford's poor Premier League form in 2016.

But the supporters left Quique Sanchez Flores in little doubt that he has made a lasting impression.

Before kick-off, the Rookery were singing their leader's praises, unfurling a giant banner bearing an image of the urbane Spaniard, and there was little let-up in the chant.

7. Carroll looking sharp

The striker didn't manage to add to his recent six goals in his last six games but the fit-again target man was a constant threat for Albion's defence.

He occupied them throughout and teed up Noble to make it 3-0.

8. Not all Arsenal fans are revolting

After 12 minutes – to mark the 12 years since the last Premier League title – a minority of fans held up banners saying “Time For Change.”

The reverse side of one read: "Wenger = 12 years excuses, Ranieri = 9 months champions".

This definitely affected the atmosphere and the game. Wenger blamed Gunners fans before the match for causing his side to drop points.

But they are protesting because Arsenal don't win enough matches.

9. Liverpool didn't turn up

There's only one competition that still matters for Liverpool this season and it's not the Premier League.

If the team selection didn't give it away - it was their youngest starting XI of the Premier League era - then the lack of concentration from the players certainly did.

Daniel Sturridge, Seyi Ojo and Danny Ward were competent, but Klopp's chosen XI will have to perform a lot better than this to have any chance of overcoming their first leg deficit in the Europa League on Thursday.

10. Long wait proving worth it

It has taken a while but Shane Long is finally getting the chance he has craved up front.

He has had to be patient, waiting behind Graziano Pelle and Charlie Austin for a regular run, but is justifying Ronald Koeman's decision to finally give him a shot.

The Irishman is ideal for the position – quick, good in the air, occupies defenders, works incredibly hard and is a big goal threat.

His opener was his third in four games.
