Abortion in Rongai turns to murder case

A woman who allegedly led a friend to procure an abortion will be charged with her murder, a Kibera court ruled.

Redempta Mwanzia who was initially arrested together with Frank Njue, a clinical officer, will face murder charges at the Kajiado High Court.

In the case, police initially arrested the two on January 11 after a preliminary probe linked the clinical officer to the death of the 25-year-old girl in November 2015. The medic operates a clinic in Rongai town. The deceased who worked in a hardware in Ongata Rongai town, Kajiado County, went missing on November 23 last year.

Police records claim that she was reported missing at Ongata Rongai Police Station the next day. It was alleged that Redempta took the woman to procure the abortion which failed. When the she died, the woman allegedly put the body in a sack and drove it to her compound in the middle of the night.

When she was arrested, she allegedly confessed to concealing her friend’s death with the help of Njue. The woman led police to the septic tank where the body was retrieved on January 11.

Police believe the body may have been preserved because it was still in good condition. Afterwards, they arrested Njue. Kibera Senior Principal Magistrate Lucas Onyina initially gave police 14 days to detain the two. This week however, the doctor was released by the court and will be a prosecution witness against Redempta.
