Man shot dead in day-light ATM robbery

A man was shot dead during a robbery at an automated teller machine (ATM) at Kenyatta Market, Nairobi.

He was attacked by three gunmen on Saturday night. Police and witnesses said this prompted a confrontation before the gang dragged him away from the machine and shot him once in the head.

According to Kilimani OCPD Peter Katam, the gang escaped with an unknown amount of money.

“We do not know if they knew each other,” said Mr Katam.

Investigations on the robbery have been launched.

In Karen, a couple and their guard were shot and wounded in a robbery in their house. Police said a gang of about ten raided their home as it rained and grabbed money and jewellery.

RISING INSECURITY

As they were leaving, a confrontation broke out when the guard tried to stop them. This prompted the gang to shoot at the guard three times. They also shot and injured the couple before escaping.

Nairobi police boss Japheth Koome said they have launched a hunt for the gang.

Such incidents are on the rise in the city and police have been struggling to contain the situation.

Last week alone, six suspected thugs were shot dead in two days in a campaign to contain armed robberies.

Two were shot dead last Wednesday in a botched robbery and stolen goods found on them in Shauri Moyo..

The suspects are said to have been in the company of three others and were busy robbing residents when an alarm was raised alerting police.
