'Extremely drunk' man found sleeping in the middle of city road

New Zealand:  An 'extremely drunk' man was found asleep lying in the middle of the street following a Friday night bender.

The unidentified man, in his 20s, was lucky not have been hit by a car after deciding to take a kip on the road.

Cops took this photo after finding him apparently unconscious on the floor on Saturday morning.

"When police woke him up, he did not realise he had fallen asleep on the road," Sergeant Andrew Graham said.

The man said he had been drinking all night in the town of Napier, in New Zealand.

He lived just a short distance away from where he was found.

Cops took him home and warned him about the dangers of heavy drinking, the New Zealand Herald reports.

"This is a classic example of what can happen when you drink too much and lose control of your faculties," Sgt Graham said.

"This man could easily have been run over and luckily there was not a lot of traffic in the area at the time."

It comes after footage emerged of a 'drink driver' who was apparently so inebriated he couldn't stand after cops pulled him over.

Robert Hutchinson, 59, had no licence and had been boozing all afternoon but decided to get behind the wheel.

He crashed his Nissan Almera head-on into a Ford Ka on the A281 in Horsham, Sussex, in January.

He was banned from driving for five years, given an 18-week prison sentence, told to do 300 hours of community service and ordered to pay £85 costs and an £80 victim surcharge.
