Developers urged to work with professionals

The Property & Home Living Expo at Sarit Centre closed its doors on Sunday with calls for developers to engage professionals during construction.

Speaking during the expo’s open talk seminar, Emma Milyo, chairperson of the Architects’ Chapter of the Architectural Association of Kenya said lack of involving professionals in the name of cutting costs is the cause of collapsing of houses.

“I want to urge developers to make sure they engage professionals in the building and construction sector to safeguard developments and investments,” said Miliyo.

Winnie Kalya, senior training officer at the National Construction Authority (NCA) spoke on the need to observe building regulations.

“We are calling upon developers to ensure building regulations are adhered to by ensuring that all contractors, projects, skilled construction workers and supervisors are registered and that the construction levy of 0.5 per cent of the construction sum is paid for projects above Sh5million, with due adherence to the code of conduct ,” said Kalya.

The expo themed, ‘Stop Dreaming, Start Owning’, is in its 14th year and was organised by PrimeMedia in conjunction with BuyRent Kenya.

Exhibitors also had the opportunity of face-to-face networking opportunities meeting with their target audience quickly and easily.

“Exhibitors reassure their prospective and new clients know about their organisation’s existing and future plans, talk directly to the audiences, and forge stronger relationships, showcase their projects to regional real estate investors and are able to convince them that they have the best investment possibilities,” said BuyRent Kenya Marketing Manager Lizzie Costabir.

She added: “People dream of owning their homes; the expo enables you to interact with experts in real estate and make informed choices in property acquisition.”

Edgar Kirui, a young father and newly married said he had gone to the expo to look at residential houses and plots to buy, but was unsuccessful.

“There is no improvement in what exhibitors are offering in terms of amenities and house designs. I was hoping to get affordable deals for middle income earners but I didn’t get them,” said Kirui who added that he has attended more than 20 homes expos.
