Nyeri, Kenya: Kibabii Teachers Training College grabbed the trophy for the best play at the ongoing Kenya Schools and Colleges Drama Festival at Bishop Gatimu Ngandu Girls’ High School.

The college scooped the top position with the play Reverberation scripted by Ralph Wangatia and directed by Martin Makhanu and Wistone Matere.

The play depicts the loss of a crack pin that strains family relations, with two brothers turning against each other.

“The play was spot-on in addressing the theme of the day. Its characters were so credible they moved the audience into tears of pain and joy in equal measure,” said Alfred Odero, one of the adjudicators who is also a teacher at Kisumu Union Primary School.

“We are happy because we have invested heavily in talent nurturing and to God be the glory,” said Jessica Simiyu, the producer.

Eregi TTC took the second position with the play The Principal is Naked whilst the Kenya Technical Teachers Training College took third position with the play The Enemy Within.

The teachers training colleges completed their presentation earlier than the rest with the results being announced in a colorful ceremony presided over by the festival Chairman Chokera Kahora and the Executive Secretary Khaemba Sirengo.

“The colleges had their exclusive hall given their unique role to nurture talents as teachers and to address the need of a focused and balanced festival for all,” explained Mr Sirengo.

Thogoto TTC won in the choral verse category with the presentation Kasri on national cohesion as Kagumo and Madina TTC took second and third positions with their verses Watching the Watchman and Tutaigiza respectively.

Gennovive Gyiday from Kericho TTC was all smiles after her solo verse The Ingredients took a podium sweep in every silverware available including the Best Verse, Best Reciter, Best Costume and Decor and counting.

Written by Max Oloo and directed by Pamela Maina, the verse depicts a journey of hope, struggles and triumph. “I have no words to express how happy I am. With this win, I would like to continue with acting as a career in future,” she said.

In a newly created category Asumbi Teachers College made history by becoming the first ever winner of the Modern Creative Dance tailored in a Sakata-style movement and choreography.
