Pontyates, West, Whales: A woman who claimed surgeons left a chunk of metal inside her was finally proved right – after a screw was found in her ashes.
Carole Denby’s grieving husband Howard was stunned when he was handed the two-inch piece of titanium as part of her cremated remains.
Before her death, Carole, 63, was convinced something was wrong after a series of failed ops on a broken ankle more than eight years ago.
But her medical notes stated: “There is no evidence of any significant residual metal within the field of surgery.”
Now businessman Howard, 57, has given the screw to police, who are investigating Carole’s death for the coroner.
He believes it led to her suspected overdose from tablets at their home in Pontyates, Carmarthenshire.
He said: “Carole was adamant there was some metal left over, but the doctors wouldn’t listen.
"Being given the screw after her cremation was devastating.
“It means she was right all along and all her misery was ignored. It broke my heart to see her fears dismissed.”
A spokesman for Morriston Hospital in Swansea said they would “co-operate fully” with the investigation.
