A student surprised a city court after he went on his knees to beg for a reduction of his bail.
Bernard Kiruma, 27, a commerce student, was charged with malicious damage on September 25 at Park Road.
The court heard that Kiruma damaged a microwave valued at Sh35,000, belonging to Joyce Wachira. Kiruma had allegedly checked into the complainant’s eatery for a plate of chips and sausage around 6pm in a drunken state.
Police said while Kiruma was waiting to be served, he rose and sat on the microwave and damaged it in the process.
Kiruma pleaded with the magistrate for forgiveness saying the Sh10,000 cash bail was too much for him:
“I am bachelor of commerce student at Kenyatta University, I cannot afford that sum as bail, please sir, kindly forgive me,” pleaded the student.
Luckily, senior principal magistrate Timothy Okello was accommodating. “I’ve heard that you are really a good defender, is it because of your career choice?” posed the magistrate, who reduced the bail to Sh5,000. His trial begins on January 9.
