Kenya hosts key transport forum next week

Kenya will host a key transport and environment conference at the United Nations Environment Programme (Unep) headquarters in Gigiri, Nairobi starting Monday.

Transport and Infrastructure Cabinet Secretary Michael Kamau said hosting ministers for Transport, Environment and technical officers from 53 Africa Union member States to the first Africa Sustainable Transport Forum in Nairobi, is key to developing a sustainable transport action plan for Africa.

“The conference brings together all ministers from the continent responsible for transport and their counterparts responsible for environment,” he said. The meeting is jointly organised by the Government, Unep, UN-Habitat and the World Bank.

The event will focus on sharing of policies, knowledge and best practices as well as look at international transport solutions. Participants will also discuss transport and environmental issues with a view to finding mobility solutions for ‘green growth’. Others will include showcasing best practices in sustainable transport across Africa and benchmark best practices through partnership and collaboration in transport network.

The event will provide a platform for participating States to share and integrate sustainable transport into regions’ development and planning processes and increase funding for sustainable transport programmes across Africa. Eng Kamau said the ministers will also have a session on mobilising investments for sustainable transport and explore financing modules for sustainable transport in Africa.
