Dr Kase Lawal:The oil tycoon changing Africa

Recently awarded a number of oil exploration blocks in Kenya, oil mogul Dr Kase Lawal has continued to stamp his position and influence in the energy business globally.

Dr Kase Lawal is the founder of CAMAC, a United States based company involved in exploration, development and production of oil and gas which recently opened offices in Nairobi to extend its African reach.

Born in Nigeria, Dr Lawal left his home country to study in the US where he started CAMAC in 1986. He has grown it to a multi-billion company which has been listed as one of the largest black-owned businesses in the US.

Money and profit margins aside, Dr Lawal has a passion for social responsibility. A well-known philanthropist, he supports initiatives related to furthering economic stability and growth, academic enrichment, cultural arts appreciation, and an improvement of quality of life in all the communities in which his companies operate.

Despite leaving Nigeria at a tender age, the mogul has never forgotten his roots.  He strongly believes education is the gateway to a better life and is keenly aware of the many financial restrictions faced by the children who desire to pursue a higher education.

To curb these financial restrictions, he has established the Lawal Scholarship which was introduced in August 2012 in Nigeria.  The Lawal Scholarship was designed to reach out to financially distressed students who are pursuing studies in the oil and gas field. The selection and nomination of student is made through and by various universities.

To date, the Nigeria Scholarship has received over $250,000 over the last three years from the Lawal Foundation

Spreading his efforts beyond Nigeria, on September 2, 2010 Dr. Lawal and the Jacob G. Zuma RDP Education Trust entered into a five-year agreement aimed at promoting the objectives of uplifting and providing access to education for talented yet disadvantaged young South Africans mainly from the rural areas.

Given the common interest toward uplifting and developing communities, Dr. Lawal, through CAMAC, pledges to contribute nearly USD 100,000 each year, for a period of five years, towards the education of young South Africans in their home country. Currently, the JZ RDP Education Trust is well over $100,000 contribution a year since 2010
