West Pokot Senator John Lonyangapuo has opposed the appointment of Prof Laban Ayiro as acting vice chancellor of Moi University.

Prof Lonyangapuo, who was speaking during the 11th graduation ceremony at Rift Valley Institute of Science and Technology (RVIST), said the appointment was not done on merit adding that those who were reacting were concerned about the flawed process.

He added that three names were presented to Jogoo House by the university council and Prof Ayiro's name was not among them.

"I was the head of the university for a period of five years and didn't experience any form of tribalism in the university," said the senator.

The selection, according to the senator, took long, an indication that something was cooking noting that Prof Richard Mibey whose term had ended in July was to be replaced by August but this did not happen.

He also supported Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago saying he was fighting for the rights of those disregarded and demanded for transparency.

Mr Mandago had mobilised a section of residents who took to the streets to protest against the appointment of the vice chancellor.
