Simple tricks for natural hair

Beauty

Natural hair is a lifetime commitment and every natural girl?s hair is a unique and personal journey. Esther Muchene with the help of natural hair blogger SHEILA NDINDA, shows how to get it right and begin the transformation.

• You don?t have to do a big chop to get natural. Opt to transition by halting all chemicals and let your natural hair grow out.

• Identify your hair type. Most African hair falls under type 4, which is kinky hair and there are those that fall under type 3, which is curly hair. Depending on the diameter of the curl, it will fall under either 4A, 4B, 4C or a combination of the afore mentioned.

• Know your hair porosity that is, how well it absorbs moisture. Always keep it moisturised to avoid brittleness and breakage.

• Working with moisturizing shampoos, weekly hot oil treatments, deep conditioners and natural oils will restore your hair, promote hair growth and shine.

• To achieve a natural look without a wash and go, do Bantu knot outs or twist outs on dry or damp hair.

• Using gel, if you do not mind, will help defi ne your curls more so on wet hair.

• Avoid heat as much as possible. If you have to straighten your hair, try the banding or African threading method.

• Braids and lines are great protective styles for natural hair but don?t plait them too tight to preserve your hair line.

• Trims and the right hair cut like Sheila?s tapered cut help with volume ad styling.

• Sleep in a satin bonnet or head scarf to prevent frizz, dryness, and breakage
