Senate Speaker praises Church for role in easing political temperatures

Senate speaker Ekwee Ethuro

Senate Speaker Ekwee Ethuro has praised the Church for helping reduce political temperatures.

He said the church prevented the country from taking a dangerous direction.

The speaker commended the recent contribution of the Church towards reaching a common stand on electoral reforms pushed by the Opposition.

He said the Church was a unifying factor that saw the political class sit and agree to use parliamentary approach on the electoral reforms.

"I was impressed with the role of the Church to bring political leaders from Jubilee and the Opposition together to speak with one voice on Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC)," he said.

Speaker Ethuro urged politicians to cultivate the spirit of dialogue to resolve disputes that could otherwise hurt the country.

Mr Ethuro said it was unhealthy for leaders to create unfriendly political temperatures by engaging in protests instead of seeking dialogue to settle emerging issues.

The speaker encouraged politicians to shun confrontational politics.

He encouraged Jubilee and CORD leaders to settle on a constitutional approach to handle the contentious electoral reforms.

"It is my plea that our political leaders embrace tolerance and dialogue to address issues instead of resorting to unhealthy ways," the Senate speaker added.
