Terror suspect shot dead in police swoop

Police in Kwale yesterday shot dead a terror suspect linked to the recent killing of police informers.

Kinango Sub-county Deputy Commissioner Moses Ivuto said Ali Salim was killed yesterday afternoon at Kabigini forest in Mbita village at around 2.30pm.

Other police sources in Nairobi claimed two terror suspects had been killed in the county.

It is unclear why the suspect was killed amid claims he was felled as he fled from advancing police officers.

Mr Ivuto said three other suspects had been arrested and were being held up at the Kinango police station.

Those apprehended are Ibrahim Mohamed Abdi, 17, Hamisi Kassim, 16 and Shadrack Mondao.

"The first two were arrested on Sunday at a forest after residents raised alarm.

"The third one and the deceased were found after police combed the area. The deceased tried to escape and was fatally shot," said Ivuto.

Officers said they recovered one hand grenade, a dagger and a motorbike stolen in Matuga.

Meanwhile, an explosion was reported in Hulugho in Garissa County.

There were conflicting reports whether what hit an ambulance in the area was an improvised explosive devise or an accident.

Police said a medical personnel who was in the ambulance was critically injured and that reinforcement had been sent to establish the cause of the blast. But sources who requested anonymity said the medical worker died to injuries caused by the blast.
