Five killed in freak crash on Kangundo road

Five people were killed when the car they were travelling in crashed into a bridge along the Kangundo-Nairobi highway.

Four died on the spot, while the fifth died while undergoing treatment at Kangundo Level Four Hospital. The driver survived the crash but is fighting for his life at the same hospital.

The accident, which occurred at around 6.30pm, caused a heavy traffic snarl up along the busy highway.

Yesterday, Matungulu Officer Commanding Police Division Joseph Chesire urged road users to be careful, especially during weekends when traffic is heavy. "We will also take firm action against private vehicles which carry excess passengers just the same way we deal with public service vehicles," Mr Cherire said.

Meanwhile, Machakos Deputy Governor Bernard Kiala has for the first time announced in public that he will run against Governor Alfred Mutua in next year's elections.

Mr Kiala, who spoke during a fundraiser at Kangundo Central Catholic Church claimed Dr Mutua had failed to deliver the promises he made to Machakos residents during their campaigns in 2013.

"I want to declare here that next year I will not be Mutua's running mate, but instead I will offer myself to run for the gubernatorial seat," he said.

In 2014, the Machakos County Assembly impeached Kiala over alleged gross misconduct and abuse of office. But Senate refused to impeach him giving the embattled deputy a lifeline in a near-midnight vote.
