Nemanja Matic set to become Mourinho's first Manchester United signing

Namanja Matic.

Jose Mourinho will target Chelsea midfield general Nemanja Matic as part of his Manchester United squad overhaul, according to the Daily Mail.

The Special One will look to be reunited with his former Chelsea star as he is set to be handed a £200million transfer kitty upon his appointment.

The same report suggests that Mourinho will make moves for Everton's John Stones and Real Madrid's Raphael Varane, in a bid to firm up the defence, and would cost a combined £80million.

It is also suggested that United could make a move for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Joao Mario.

Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata is keen on staying with the club despite his previous fall-outs with Jose Mourinho, report the Daily Mail.

The Spaniard is believed to be prepared to build bridges in his relationship with the incoming manager.

Mourinho axed Mata during his second spell at Chelsea and sold him to United for £37million back in January 2014.

Neville and Kidd to join?

Gary Neville and Brian Kidd could join Jose Mourinho at Manchester United, according to The Sun.

It is alleged that the Special One will speak to Neville in a bid to lure him onto the coaching staff, just months after he was ditched by Valencia.

United are believed to be keen on convincing Kidd to leave his role at rivals Manchester City to return to the club where he spent his playing days.

Ryan Giggs, however, is reportedly set to quit Old Trafford.

Mourinho phone call confirmed Van Gaal's fate

Louis van Gaal knew he was finished at Manchester United in a shock phone call... from his successor Jose Mourinho, writes Mirror Football's David McDonnell.

Van Gaal was finally sacked on Monday after two years in charge, with former Chelsea boss Mourinho set to replace him on a three-year deal.

But it has emerged Mourinho rang the Dutchman, with whom he worked at Barcelona, himself to admit United had sounded him out about the Old Trafford job.

Mourinho is said to have made the call in the last couple of weeks to preserve his long-standing friendship with Van Gaal , and to ensure there was no ill-feeling when it emerged he was the man United wanted.

Until that point, the 64-year-old had defiantly dismissed the notion that he would be sacked with a year remaining on his contract, believing he would see out his three-year deal.

Zlatan poised to become Mourinho's first signing

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is set to become the first signing of the Jose Mourinho era at Manchester United, writes Mirror Football's David McDonnell.

It is understood Ibrahimovic, a free agent after his contract with Paris St Germain expired, has agreed a deal to join United this summer.

Ibrahimovic, 34, is said to have agreed a one-year deal with an option for a further year, and the move could be announced within the next 48 hours.

The Sweden skipper was keen to resolve his future before he leads his country at Euro 2016 and will be reunited with incoming United boss Jose Mourinho, whom he played under at Inter Milan.

Mourinho wants to begin work immediately and has been working on transfer targets, with United determined to do their business early under their new boss.

Van Gaal left "very disappointed"

Louis van Gaal admitted he was "very disappointed" after it was confirmed he had been sacked by Manchester United.

Despite winning the FA Cup, the Dutchman has ultimately paid the price for failing to secure Champions League football at the Theatre of Dreams next season.

Now Jose Mourinho is ready to take charge at Old Trafford when he puts pen to paper on a three-year-deal worth a staggering £30million.

Van Gaal paid tribute to Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Bobby Charlton as he broke his silence on his sacking for the first-time in a 418-word statement.

He wrote: "It has been an honour to manage such a magnificent club as Manchester United FC, and in doing so, I have fulfilled a long held ambition.

"I am immensely proud to have helped Manchester United win the FA Cup for the 12th time in the club’s history. I have been privileged during my management career to have won 20 trophies but winning the FA Cup, which is steeped in so much history, will always be one of the most special achievements of my career.

Daley Blind speaks out about Van Gaal sacking

Manchester United defender Daley Blind has criticised the club's decision to sack Louis van Gaal, writes Mirror Football's David McDonnell.

Blind, bought by Van Gaal from Ajax for £13.8million in 2014, said he was shocked by United's decision to sack his fellow Dutchman.

Holland international Blind, the first United player to speak publicly about Van Gaal's sacking, said: "I've enjoyed working with the manager so much.

"I would have liked to have carried on for a long while. A manager at a big club in the Premier League will always be under pressure.

"But in the case of Van Gaal he has not been treated fairly over the last six months.

"I think a manager with the status of Van Gaal, who has achieved so much in his career, deserved more respect.

"No matter what was said or written about him as a manager, he never stopped protecting us as players.

"He has defended us under any kind of circumstances, he was always taking the stick instead of us.

"I think I can say that the whole squad is grateful for that, for what he has done in that respect for us as players.

"As players we kept believing in each other and we also kept believing in our manager, which was part of the reason we were able to win the FA Cup.

"We achieved this as a group, including the manager. In the end, this was a successful season in our eyes."

Woodward wishes Van Gaal well

Manchester United have hailed Louis van Gaal's 'professionalism and dignity' after his sacking was confirmed, writes Mirror Football's Liam Prenderville.

In a statement released just after 8.30pm on Monday, United announced Van Gaal's departure with a year remaining on his deal.

Ed Woodward went to Van Gaal's home on Sunday night to inform him of his sacking, with Jose Mourinho set to replace him at Old Trafford.

The statement was released by chief executive Woodward, who confirmed a decision on Van Gaal's replacement would be announced soon.

He wrote: "I would like to thank Louis and his staff for their excellent work in the past two years culminating in winning a record-equalling 12th FA Cup for the club (and securing him a title in four different countries).

"He has behaved with great professionalism and dignity throughout his time here.

"He leaves us with a legacy of having given several young players the confidence to show their ability on the highest stage.

"Everyone at the club wishes him all the best in the future."
