CS Fred Matiang'i asks EACC to probe axed varsity boss

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has written to the anti-corruption agency asking it to investigate a former university vice chancellor.

In a letter addressed to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Dr Matiang'i called for an investigation into former Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) Vice Chancellor Josephat Mwatela over alleged irregularities.

"I wish to report and seek investigation into his conduct during his tenure and other officers of TUM," read a letter dated May 12 addressed to EACC Chairman Philip Kinisu.

"I have taken the painful and deliberate action to release Prof Mwatela from the position of vice chancellor of the Technical University of Mombasa," it added.

Matiang'i said from the allegations made against the vice chancellor, he had every reason to believe there was misconduct and abuse of office.

"I have reason to believe there is infringement of relevant provisions of Chapter Six of the Constitution and the Anti-Corruption Act," he added. Earlier, the university's council had served Mwatelah with a warning letter and he has been on suspension since February 25.

A special meeting held on May 3 and 4 by the university council had also found the vice chancellor guilty of eight of the 10 charges levelled against him but declined to fire him.
