School directed to register pregnant girls for KCSE exams

St Mary’s Shihome Girls High School in Kakamega has been directed to register the expectant students for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i directed Kakamega County Director of Education Susan Murerwa to ensure the students are registered.

The directive follows a story published by The Standard yesterday highlighting the plight of the girls.

Dr Matiang’i further asked the Kenya National Examinations Council to facilitate the students’ registration even though the period had lapsed.

He said the school had gone against the education policy by stopping the girls from sitting the examinations because of being pregnant.

The school’s principal, Florence Najoli, said the rate of pregnancy in the school was alarming and urged the community to work with the school to address the problem.
