NTSA urges counties to moot safety teams

National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has petitioned governors to constitute and operationalise county road safety committees.

NTSA’s deputy director in charge of Safety Enforcement and Accidents Investigations Hared Adan said that although they had conducted road safety training workshops in at least 20 counties, most of them were yet to constitute the crucial committees.

“We have selected a number of high risk counties where statistics indicate that there are a high number of fatalities and we are engaging the counties there,” said Adan.

The deputy director said that county road safety committees are crucial for the co-ordination of road safety activities in addressing the problem of illegal public service vehicle (PSV) operators.

“Illegal public service vehicles such as Probox operate in the counties’ bus termini yet they have not complied with traffic regulations. The counties must therefore increase the level of awareness on the risks of boarding such vehicles,” said Adan.

He made the remarks at Finlays Tea Estate during a road safety training workshop for the company’s managers, drivers and boda boda operators.

Finlay’s Environment Road and Safety Manager Reuben Langat said the safety of third party road users is of major concern to the company.

He added that the company spends at least Sh600,000 annually in road safety campaigns.
