One person was killed and four others sustained injuries Tuesday when a Lang'ata route matatu rammed into a bakery within Nairobi.

Nairobi area head of traffic, Mr Leonard Katana said that a guard who was manning Bakers Inn, near the Railways roundabout, was killed on spot while the other four workers who were at the counter sustained injuries.

“One person- a security guard- was killed after a matatu belonging to St Mary's Sacco rammed into bakers inn," he said, adding that a woman who was at the counter sustained serious injuries.

Onlookers said in the 4pm incident, they saw the driver shouting and the vehicle was speeding off.

"I saw the vehicle come at a high speed from Haille Selassie roundabout and it went straight into the bakery. People who were passing outside the bakery to either railways or town had to scamper for safety," said Josphat Munyao who was heading to Railway bus terminus.

He said the vehicle flew few meters high and rammed into the bakery, adding that there was no passenger on board during the incident.

"The incident took seconds. I am still shocked at how a matatu can move from the road straight into a building," he added.

Three officers who controlling the traffic at the roundabout were lucky as the matatu just 'passed them normally.'

The wrecked matatu was towed to Central police station whilst the injured were rushed to hospital.

At the same time, another person died and three others were injured along Lang'ata road. They are said to have been hit by a matatu at the stage.
