Those looking to buy or sell buildings stones or hire a plumber can now do so on OLX more easily. This after the free online classifieds platform created category for the construction industry. The new category caters for construction tools and equipment, building materials and construction services.

According to OLX Kenya Country Manager Peter Ndiang’ui, they saw the demand for construction from users of the platform. “We have seen a lot of traction on the site from the construction sector in terms of construction tools and equipment, construction material and building fittings which were posted under the Home, Furniture and Garden category,” he said.

“There was demand by users to have these services centralised in one category for easy accessibility, which only goes to show the demand of construction category,” said Ndiang’ui.

The platform, which allows for anyone with the OLX application on their phones to upload and advertise their services for free has gained tract in the market, with individuals and companies selling their wares and services online.

Growing sector

Ndiang’ui, whose company recently launched a newer app, explained the significance of real estate into the online market.

“The construction industry is a reflection of our household spending and is also among Kenya’s high growth sectors. Last year saw Kenya’s construction sector grow by 14 per cent followed closely by Energy sector at 11 per cent. This shows that the future of construction industry is promising,” he said.

“As OLX, we saw the need to align ourselves with things that are driving the country’s economy and tap into it as many users as possible,” he added.

The new category has registered an estimated 600 sellers since it was launched.  “The traffic on our site is enough to counter a supply of goods. We have had cases of sellers posting on OLX and an overwhelming number of buyers calling to demand for the goods,” said Ndiang’ui.

So, for that merchant with services or goods who has never interacted with OLX, what do they need to do to get more customers? “OLX is a Free Online classified, all one needs to access our site is a smartphone and of course to download the app from (Google) Playstore and post items or services for free,” said Pauline Masese, OLX communications manager.

“Anyone can easily post on our site after taking photos of the product. A good photo is always key when posting on OLX. The buyer can only rely on the photo to make a decision since he cannot come to your shop. This is where you apply the rule of first impression matters,” she said.
