Cops forced to wear trainers amid 'embarrassing' shortage of boots

Bobbies on the beat are being forced to wear trainers after a shortage in uniform left them without standard issue boots.

The Barcelona cops have been left red-faced after they were told to don the casual footwear instead of smart police boots.

This comes after cutbacks meant there is a shortage in uniform at the Mossos d'Esquadra unit in the Spanish city.

They have put in an official complaint to their union about the lack of proper clothing to do their job.

According to claims, some of the officers have been wearing the same pair of regulation boots for seven years because cutbacks and supplies promised for the New Year have still failed to materialise.

Now, officers have to spoil their look by wearing their own sneakers or trainers.

A spokesman for the Trade Union of the Catalan regional police force (USPAC) said: "If you find an agent of the Catalan police with his cap, uniform, gun and ... sneakers, do not be surprised."

The problem is said to be widespread throughout the force and a letter has been sent to the chief executive to press for an urgent solution, describing the dilemma as "embarrassing".

Officers say it might seem humorous but has a very serious side because of health and safety, and they claim it can increase the risk to their feet and catching colds when the weather drops.

The union was told new boots would arrive in December or January but not even one pair has materialised so far.

They say they keep hearing the same excuses but point out it is against the laws of occupational health.

In their letter of complaint, the officers say the situation is "shameful" and "undignified".

The Mossos d'Esquadra are one of the oldest police forces in Europe and are known for their tough approach.

They are often seen with full body armour and even machine guns.
