Nairobi Senator Mike Mbuvi Sonko wants county boss case to go on

Nairobi Senator Mike Mbuvi alias Sonko has opposed an application by Nairobi County Chief of Staff George Wainaina Njogu seeking to stop his trial.

Sonko, through lawyer Lydia Kwamboka, said yesterday that staying the proceedings of the criminal court as sought by Mr Wainaina would interfere with the duty of the court and its independence.

"The petition is an afterthought, one that is well-calculated to defeat justice and ought to be dismissed. I urge the court to direct that the criminal proceedings commence forthwith," the senator said.

Sonko said he had never run a mafia cartel as alleged by Wainaina, adding that the latter's application is intended to delay the hearing of the case in the anti-corruption court.

Sonko also said that after he was approached with the Sh1 million bribe, he immediately reported the matter to EACC. He dismissed Wainaina's allegations that he attempted to solicit Sh7 million from his brother John Njogu.

The High Court  temporarily stopped Wainaina's trial on January 17. The case had been put on hold until yesterday when the court was to hear Wainaina's petition challenging his prosecution in the Magistrate's Court.

Wainaina and his secretary Roselyn Oluoch are charged with offering Sonko Sh1 million to buy his silence over grabbing of public land.
