A Kisumu court has given Kakamega County and its health workers one month to try to reconcile following a strike notice issued by the workers.

Kisumu Employment and Labour  Relations Court Judge Maureen Onyango ruled on Thursday that the two parties should appear before the Kakamega County labour office to resolve a salaries dispute.

The Kenya Union of Nurses issued a strike notice on January 11 and 13 warning the Kakamega County Service Board of the planned strike.  To stop the strike the county, through its Public Service Board, filed an application under a certificate of urgency asking the court to intervene in the dispute.

The workers listed among their grievances, delayed promotions and salary increases, poor working conditions and harassment of nurses.

On Thursday, Justice Onyango directed: “The parties are directed to go for reconciliation before the (Kakamega) County labour office and the report should be filed in court within 30 days.”
