Two police officers in court for attempts to blackmail woman using nude photos

Kenya: Attempts by two police officers to blackmail a woman with her “nude pictures” have landed them in court.

Nicholas Otieno Omondi and Henry Onyach Gwendo are alleged to have demanded Sh500,000 from the woman on unknown dates between February and November 2015. They denied the charges.

The court heard that the two men sent her a text message, warning her that if she failed to pay them the money, they would send the offensive pictures to her husband.

According to a police report, the incident began sometime in February when the businesswoman received a text from Mr Gwendo stating that he had photographs of her naked.

“The suspect went ahead to say that if he was not given Sh500,000 he would post the photos on the internet and also send them to her husband,” the report partly reads.

The woman, the court heard, pleaded with the two men on several occasions but her pleas fell on deaf ears. She even sent Sh5,000 to an M-Pesa line given to her by the two but they demanded she pays the whole amount.

“The matter cooled off until November when the complainant was called again and told to send more money,” the police report adds.

She reportedly sent a further Sh5,000 to the two men, but got annoyed and reported the incident to the police after they demanded for more money.

The accused were finally nabbed when they contacted the woman’s husband to make a similar demand.

The husband reported the incident to the police and the suspects were arrested in Voi. Chief Magistrate Daniel Ogembo released them on Sh50,000 cash bail. The case will be heard on January 26.
