Senior warder at Naivasha GK Prison arrested sneaking in 1800 rolls of bhang

Naivasha, Kenya: There was drama at Naivasha GK prison after a senior officer was nabbed sneaking in close to 1,800 rolls of bhang and 18 mobile phones in the penal institution.

The chief inspector had hidden 1,772 rolls in several car tyres ready for supply to over 3,000 inmates, when he was nabbed.

According to an impeccable source, the officer had sneaked in the haul of drugs by hiding them in several tyres and stored some in the workshop.

"Officers on guard first found some bhang and tobacco snuff hidden near one of the prisoners block, leading to a major operation," said the source.

The source added that the bhang was found in vehicles belonging to civilians, which had been brought in for repairs by the suspect.

"The officer in charge was tipped about the ongoing business and he led the operation where tens of rolls of bhang and the mobile phones were recovered," added the source.

The officer in charge, Patrick Mwenda, confirmed the incident adding that services of the officer had since been terminated.

He termed the incident as a rare occurrence adding that they had reinforced security in the prison.

"The senior officer is in custody at Naivasha Police Station awaiting charges after he was caught in possession of rolls of bhang and mobile phones," he said.

Naivasha OCPD Titus Munyoki confirmed the incident adding that the prison officer will face various charges in court.

"From initial investigations, it seems this officer has been involved in this illegal business for some time before he was caught," he said.
