MPs fault drive to install Alfred Mutua as 'Kamba king'

As the campaign to install Governor Alfred Mutua as the Kamba flag bearer intensifies, some MPs from different parties have faulted the move, saying it is meant to divide the community.

Speaking separately, Yatta MP Francis Mwangangi of Muungano party and his Kathiani counterpart Robert Mbui of Wiper criticised those behind the campaign, saying they were being used to split the Kamba vote ahead of the 2017 General Election.

But as the two MPs spoke, the ‘Maendeleo chap chap’ initiative took its campaigns to Kilome in Makueni over the weekend after two other rallies were held in Mavoko and Machakos town.

In the campaign to install Dr Mutua in place of Kalonzo Musyoka is outspoken Kikome MP Regina Ndambuki and other MPs, who have vowed to do whatever it takes to ensure “Mutua rescues the community from poverty”.

But while presiding over the issuance of Sh40million Uwezo Fund cheques to self-helf groups in his constituency, Mr Mwangangi told the governor and his group to leave Kalonzo alone and concentrate on his position.

“The governor should stop the ongoing campaign of ridiculing Kalonzo since the community still has faith in his leadership,” he said.

Mwangangi said youthful leaders should respect those who are older than them and learn some leadership tips from them instead of using their positions to dislodge them.

REPLACEMENT TIME

“I was not elected on a Wiper party but I have a reason to defend Kalonzo since he’s the community’s elder and time to replace him is not yet ripe,” he said.

Mr Mbui said the campaign was funded by the Jubilee to try and divide Kamba leaders, saying the efforts would be in vain. “How can the people of Machakos elect a governor and later start turning against the community’s leader. This is ridiculous and the governor should learn from history about those who have tried such a mission,” he said.

Mbui said the governor had accepted to be used by political detractors of the community to betray it, adding time has come when leaders should rise up and resist the move.

Former Kathiani MP Wavinya Ndeti accused Mutua of using county resources to drum up support for his campaign in other counties.
