Politics of tribalism and ethnicity a threat to national unity in Kenya, says Deputy President William Ruto

Deputy President William Ruto said today that politics of ethnicity and tribalism are a threat to nationhood and asked Kenyans to uphold ideals that will hold the country together.

He made it clear that national unity will remain elusive if every community advanced their own narrow interests warning that fragmentation of the country along ethnic and tribal lines was a recipe for chaos.

“It is for this reason that I teamed up with President Uhuru Kenyattta  to run on the same ticket during the last general elections  with the aim of uniting  all Kenyan tribes  and ending   animosity that characterized  every election season,” said Ruto.

Speaking at Kiptagich and Keringeti schools in Kuresoi south constituency of Nakuru County, the deputy president asked Kenyans to de-ethnicise the country by engaging in activities that enhanced nationalism and patriotism.

“Our politics must be on the basis of issues, programmes and manifestos and not narrow tribal considerations,” he added.

He said, “We are therefore asking all political parties under the umbrella of Jubilee Alliance to fold their parties in 2017 and support the candidature of President Uhuru Kenyatta under one party, the Jubilee Alliance Party.”
