Akashas fight off extradition

The sons of slain drug baron Ibrahim Akasha have raised objection against an application by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) to start extradition proceedings against them.

Lawyer Timothy Bryant said the warrant of arrest issued against Baktash Akasha, Ibrahim Akasha, Hussein Gulam and Vijaygiri Anandgiri, who are wanted in the US on drug trafficking charges, was illegal because his clients are not fugitives.

“Any holding that my clients are fugitives is an impermissible surrender of Kenya’s sovereignty. The only legal route to find that they are fugitives is by finding that the New York grand jury warrants have extended US criminal jurisdiction improperly into Kenya’s penal jurisdiction,” said Bryant.

He said it was wrong for the DPP to start extradition proceedings against his client because they have not fled the US to Kenya to evade prosecution.
