Mysterious fire guts dormitory at Moi High School, Taita

Property of unknown value was on Wednesday night destroyed after a mysterious fire razed down a dormitory in a secondary school.

Police and education officials said scores of students at Moi High, Kasigau, spent the night in the cold. On Tuesday, fires gutted dormitories in five schools in Kilifi County.

Yesterday, Voi OCPD Joshua Lutukai confirmed the incident, saying investigations into the incident were still going on.

"The cause of the fire is still unknown," said the officer.

Mr Lutukai said student lost all their belongings.

The school's Principal Laban Mwangemi could not be reached for comment.

Mwangemi's Deputy Patrick Mukwaya said investigations had been launched to establish the cause of the tragedy.

Crisis meeting

"We are in a crisis meeting. We will call you later," he told The Standard on the phone from the school.

Nominated Ward Rep Francis Rongaine said: "The county government has no fire-fighting equipment to deal with tragedies. This is dangerous and something must be done to rectify the situation."

The county government recently spelt out measures to help deal with the students' unrest.

Governor John Mruttu said students found causing unrest in their schools would be arrested and prosecuted.
