SHEER SUPREMACY: Gor restore nine-point lead with Sofapaka in second spot

With two matches to go before the first leg of the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) comes to an end, champions Gor Mahia are in sight for an amazing finish at the break.

After Muhoroni Youth failed to break their unbeaten run on Sunday at Moi Stadium Kisumu, Gor Mahia cemented their stay at the top of the log on 33 points.

The result means that Gor will finish at the top of the log when the first leg  ends as their opponents cannot catch up with them even if they lose their two remaining matches.

However, it is difficult to see how this can happen considering how well Gor Mahia have been playing of late.

CONCEDED SIX GOALS

The team has conceded just six goals and scored 27 times, making their backline one of the tightest locally.

Apart from that, they also have a number of players who have been outstanding, like Michael Olunga, and who continue to give their best week in week out.

Despite this amazing performance, coach Frank Nuttall prefers to be modest about it and insists they just have to focus on one match at a time.

“It was another impressive performance by the boys. We were a bit affected by the travelling but they still gave their best,” he said in a post-match interview.

But the calibre of officiating especially when it comes to Gor Mahia matches once again emerged with Muhoroni Youth coach Francis Barasa claiming  the KPL champions are always favoured by the men in black.

In a statement that is likely to put him in trouble with the league managers, Barasa said: “Today, the referee was biased towards Gor Mahia. He gave them every advantage and even that goal came after Ali Abondo had handled the ball. It clearly shows they are being favoured, no wonder they struggle at the continental level.”

He added: “Our referees must improve their officiating, otherwise we will continue to struggle when our teams go out there.”

PRAISED HIS BOYS

Barasa, however praised his boys for putting up a brave fight against Gor Mahia. “They did well considering that a good number of our players are very young and need time. We are looking to beef up the squad with two or three experienced players in mid-season and believe this move will help us survive against relegation,” he added.

Three wins in a row put Sofapaka to second spot on the log after collecting 24 points and now they pose real danger to Gor Mahia.

The 2009 KPL champions edged out Tusker 3-2 to maintain their winning streak against the brewers since 2012.
