Bomet leaders killing plan for local varsity

History will judge the current leadership of Bomet County harshly if the envisaged public university for the region fails to take off.

Currently, plans for the facility have been turned into a circus, courtesy of fights pitting Governor Isaac Ruto against Bomet Senator Wilson Lessan and local MPs. While Ruto wants the university built in Sigor, Lessan’s camp are for Bomet Town.

The latest revelations that President Uhuru Kenyatta might have been duped into awarding a fake land lease for the planned university during his recent visit to the county is so worrying.

Emerging reports indicate that what the President presented may not be a genuine title with Governor Ruto and Chairman of National Land Commission chairman Muhammad Swazuri terming it a strange document.

What initially was considered difference of opinion between the governor and lawmakers might turn into protracted court battle over the parcel of land the university is to be built on, dimming hopes of a university in the area.

During Uhuru’s visit, local leaders failed to speak in one voice over the university issue as well as other matters of priority for the county.
