Disabilities council happy with planned Sh1.54b allocation

BOMET: The National Council for Persons with Disabilities has welcomed the Government's pledge to increase its budgetary allocations from Sh770 million to Sh1.54 billion in the next financial year.

Council Chairman David Sankok said the potential of the six million people living with disabilities has not been fully tapped, adding that with the additional funds, they will be properly facilitated to execute their mandate.

Speaking in Narok Tuesday, Mr Sankok said: "The requests we usually receive have been overwhelming. With this increased allocation, we are sure we will reach more people who have suffered marginalisation because of disability."

Sankok said the council is rolling out a nationwide wheelchair programme that will ensure every disable Kenyan gets a wheelchair.

Sankok revealed that the National Assembly has approved a Sh300 million budget for mass registration of people living with disabilities countrywide to ensure they are captured in the national data bank.
