US: ISIS has claimed responsibility for an attack on a controversial Muhammad cartoon competition in Texas which left two gunmen dead.

Two heavily armed men, who are believed to have been carrying explosives, were shot dead by cops after launching a gun attack on the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland, Dallas.

The event featured caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad on display, which were viewed by some as offensive to Islam.

An ISIS fighter took to Twitter to claim that the shooting was carried out pro-ISIS militants, the SITE Intelligence Group reports.

SITE reportedly said British ISIS member Junaid Hussain, claimed that "2 of our brothers just opened fire" at the event.

The Tweet read "They Thought They Was Safe In Texas From The Soldiers of The Islamic State."

During the gunfight one of the men is reported to have reached for his backpack after being shot once - before being hit again, this time fatally.

Bomb disposal robots were seen checking the dead mens' vehicle, as their bodies were left lying where they had fallen.

A security guard was also wounded in the shootout which broke out as the men drove up to the exhibition at around 7pm and began firing at security guards.

The security officer who was shot in the leg during last night's attack was treated at a local hospital and later released, he said. No one else was injured.
