AP accused of assault and extortion

Kitui, Kenya: A Mwingi West resident has accused an Administration Police officer of assault after an attempt to extort money from him failed.

Mark Muli, a Jua Kali artisan, said the AP approached him at Juba bar and demanded Sh100 from him but he declined.

The officer then got infuriated threw him out of the bar, handcuffed and beat him with a metallic object.

"The police officer, who was in the company of another, caught up with me as I walked home. He slapped me on the face before hitting my head with a blunt object," said Muli, now recuperating at Migwani Sub-county Hospital.

He said he was rescued by another officer, whose gun his attacker wanted to take way.

The officer removed the handcuffs from the complainant but not before taking away some Sh1,500 from his jacket.

Muli said he staggered home and reported the matter to the local chief, before being taken to hospital.

He was initially rushed to Thitani Health Centre, where he received several stitches on his head then transferred to Migwani Sub-county Hospital after his condition worsened.

Thitani Chief Mwendwa Kanyolo confirmed the incident and promised that the rogue officer will face the law.

DISCIPLINE RECORD

But the constable, who was previously attached at the Thitani Chief office in Migwani is yet to be arrested or charged.

Deputy County AP Commandant Protus Wamalwa said the officer, whose name he gave as Gideon Nyagah will face disciplinary measures if guilty of the offence, once investigations are complete.

He said the officer has since been moved to Migwani Deputy Commissioner’s office.

Wamalwa told The Standard yesterday that the officer was moved from Kiambu County to Kitui a month ago on disciplinary measures.
