Doctor in Kenya's MP Gideon Mwiti's rape saga charged

Kenya: A doctor mentioned in the rape scandal surrounding Imenti Central MP Gideon Mwiti has been charged.

David Mwangi, who is alleged to have conducted a HIV test on a woman before she was raped by the MP, was accused of operating his clinic without a licence.

Mr Mwangi appeared before Kibera Principal Magistrate Lucas Onyina's on Monday alongside his cashier, John Kinyua Njeru, at Kibera Law Courts, where they denied the charges.

The two were accused of committing the offence at Fig Tree Medical Centre in Ngara, Nairobi on March 27. The clinic was shut down by police and the board's officials.

The court was informed that the accused were found engaging in general practice as private medical practitioners in premises not authorised for use by the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board.

The two faced another count of engaging in private business as private practitioners without a licence on diverse dates between January1 and March 27.

The last count stated that the two were unlawfully operating a pharmacy since they were not registered by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board.

The doctor is alleged to have taken a blood sample and conducted a HIV test on the woman who was reportedly raped by the MP.

The woman claims the MP had called her to his office in Westlands, Nairobi, at night for a business deal when the incident happened.

The victim claimed the MP was accompanied by a doctor who claimed he works at a private clinic in Ngara, after which they forcibly took her blood samples for testing before the alleged sexual assault happened. After taking the samples, the doctor allegedly took them for testing and came back and informed the MP she was HIV-negative.

The accused were released on a bond of Sh100,000 with a surety of similar amount pending hearing of the case on June 2.
