Embu,Kenya: Area leaders led by the Senator Lenny Kivuti have asked the Ministry of Education to speed up issuing of a charter to Embu University College to make it a fully-fledged university.

Mr Kivuti said the three-year-old has come of age to get a charter to enable it to set up campuses. Speaking during launch of the university's Strategic Plan 2014-2018 and celebrations of ISO 9001:2008 certification on Monday, the senator said in setting up the institution, over 2300 professionals and leaders from the county had resolved they wanted a university and it was important that it continues to grow.

County Secretary for Land Jamleck Muturi called on area MPs to assist the university - a constituent college of the University of Nairobi - get extra land on which to establish campuses and research centres.

Mbeere South MP Muriuki Njagagua and John Muchiri (Manyatta) promised to offer their support.

The principal Daniel Mugendi said the Rattansi Educational Trust in collaboration with the Michael Bhindell Trust had provided grants worth Sh1.8 million for purchase of library material.
